Activities

At Plas Pencelli, the emphasis is on offsite adventurous activities – building resilience, confidence, teamwork and trust. To maximise the educational benefit for students, programmes are usually designed around full-day activities. See our sample programmes below.

Kayaking

Kayaking takes place mainly on the Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal and is a fun and engaging outdoor activity. The calm waters are perfect for beginners, with a journey element that takes participants through scenic countryside and historic canal features like stone bridges and old lock systems.

Kayaking builds teamwork and communication, while it improves strength & balance. Along the way, participants discover the canal’s rich history as a 19th-century transport route for coal and iron, adding depth to the experience.

Canoeing

The Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal, right on our doorstep, provides an ideal setting for canoeing—a rewarding, team-based activity. Students paddle in pairs or three’s, navigating the calm, tree-lined waters while developing essential skills in teamwork, communication, and resilience.

A highlight of many journeys is the passage through the Ashford Tunnel, a 375-yard hand-cut canal tunnel that adds a sense of adventure and connects students to the region’s industrial heritage. Once a vital route for transporting coal and iron, the canal still bears visible traces of its 19th-century past.

For older students, more challenging experiences may take place on the River Usk or River Wye, where varied conditions—from gentle flows to faster currents—offer opportunities to build confidence and strengthen group dynamics.

Whether exploring the peaceful canal or tackling the flowing rivers, students work together to steer, problem-solve, and support one another—gaining both physical coordination and valuable life skills.

Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing takes place in the now disused limestone quarries of the Brecon Beacons, offering a progressive and challenging experience for students of all abilities.

The activity begins with bouldering and traversing—low-level climbs that focus on movement, balance, and problem-solving. As confidence grows, students progress to higher rock faces, learning to belay each other and take responsibility for one another’s safety.

Climbing is not just physical—it’s a powerful tool for building trust, teamwork, and encouragement. Students support each other through challenges, celebrate successes, and develop resilience in a real-world setting.

Caving

Caving offers students a thrilling journey into the underground limestone cave systems of the Brecon Beacons. Suitable for all abilities, this activity explores an incredible subterranean world filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and striking calcium carbonate formations.

Students navigate through active river caves, large chambers, and tight passages, with opportunities to tackle challenging squeezes that test both physical and mental resilience. The experience encourages teamwork, trust, and mutual support, as participants rely on one another to move safely and confidently through the cave environment.

Caving combines adventure with discovery, offering a unique chance to explore geology, natural history, and for personal growth—all beneath the surface of the Brecon Beacons

Mountain Walking

Mountain Walking offers students a great mix of physical challenge, geographical exploration, and personal development in the heart of the Brecon Beacons.

Walks take students across dramatic landscapes shaped by Limestone and Old Red Sandstone and the powerful forces of glaciation. U-shaped valleys, steep ridges, and glacially carved basins offer a striking backdrop for learning and adventure. Routes often include scaling high peaks such as Pen y Fan, the highest point in southern Britain. Along the way, students pass geological features that tell the story of ancient ice movement and erosion.

This activity promotes endurance, challenge, and a strong team-focused approach. Students develop skills in map reading, navigation, and leadership, while supporting one another through changing terrain and weather. It’s a rewarding experience that builds resilience, confidence, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

Gorge Walking

Gorge Walking is an exhilarating, all-encompassing activity that brings together elements of climbing, scrambling, sliding, and bathing in the wild terrain of the Brecon Beacons.

Set in dramatic Old Red Sandstone gorges, students explore waterfalls, deep river-carved pools, and narrow rocky channels. The activity involves scrambling over boulders, climbing natural rock features, and sliding into plunge pools, offering both physical challenge and pure fun.

Gorge walking is often seen as the culmination of a successful week, combining skills from across the centre’s programme—teamwork, trust, resilience, and encouragement. It’s a shared adventure that pushes boundaries and strengthens group bonds in a truly unforgettable setting.

Gorge Walking is often preceded by a traverse through a disused railway tunnel, where the darkness requires clear communication, cooperation, and mutual encouragement—pulling together everything learned throughout the week.

Adventure Walks

Usually the first activity at Plas Pencelli, students get kitted up in waterproofs, wellies, helmets and belts and set off for a lively exploration of the grounds. They’re challenged to embrace the untamed environment around them, trails grow trickier, puddles deeper, and the mud more unavoidable. But instead of dodging the dirt, we go through it, clambering over roots, splashing through water, and sliding down hillsides. Friends help each other through the squelchy bits and encourage each other to get involved. By the end, they’re soaked, muddy, tired and completely exhilarated.

Sample Activity Programmes

Personal development opportunities were really successful and given the wide range of abilities & competencies of our students, we were really impressed how the instructors were able to adapt activities so that all could achieve something. The opportunity for our geography students not just to look & see but to immerse in & connect with the geographical landscape was invaluable.
