Plas Pencelli Celebrates Its Place in Brecon Mountain Rescue Team History

Visitors to Plas Pencelli may have spotted the Mountain Rescue Post plaque fixed to the end of the barn and wondered about the story behind it. That small sign marks a significant chapter in local rescue history

Brecon Mountain Rescue Team (BMRT), founded in 1968, established its very first permanent base right here at Plas Pencelli Outdoor Education Centre. Former Head of Centre George Batten was among the founding members, stepping forward after the search for a missing walker near Tor y Foel highlighted the need for a dedicated rescue team in the area.

In December, the original historic plaque was returned to BMRT for display in their impressive new headquarters in Brecon. In its place, a newly made sign has been generously donated to Plas Pencelli as a lasting reminder of the centre’s role in the early days of the team.

Plas Pencelli staff were recently invited for a tour of the new headquarters, where a team member (and former Plas Pencelli Instructor) delivered a fascinating and informative talk on the team’s history and ongoing work. Staff learned about the scale and variety of BMRT’s operations, the specialist vehicles and technologies they rely on, the extensive skills required of volunteers, and the close collaboration the team maintains with other emergency services. The visit offered a valuable moment to reflect on the challenges of working in the Brecon Beacons and the vital support networks provided by BMRT’s dedicated volunteers.
